Human activities
The Marine Nature Park is home to a large number of human activities, both recreational and professional.
The different activities
In the Park’s waters and on its shore, fishing activities includes numerous uses : professional fishing and leisure fishing, onshore fishing, sea fishing, and marine cultures. Also, numerous outdoor sports are practiced : kite-surfing, hiking, horse riding, sand yachting… For outdoor sports lovers, the Park's natural features and landscapes make it an attractive playground. Industrial uses are significant, particularly in the Strait of Pas de Calais, which concentrates 20% of the world's maritime traffic. Finally, maritime hunting, i.e. the hunting of waterfowl, is deeply rooted in the Hauts-de-France region.
The actions for a sustainable development
Sustainable development of these activities is one of the three goals of the Estuaires Picards and Mer d’Opale Marine Nature Park.
For instance, a compostable and biodegradable net has been set up by the Park in partnership with the FROM Nord producers organisation, targeting the sea fishermen. For the onshore fishers, a ruler has been created : it ensures compliance with regulations on minimum sizes for shellfish and crustaceans. A charter of good practice has been drawn up for providers of coastal observation and discovery activities: signatories undertake to respect the good practice gestures to protect seals.
